Meditations from John 15:7: Remain

“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.’ John 15:7

As you live with someone – whether a roommate or a spouse – you begin to understand their nature more and more over time. The same parallel is true with you and Christ. As you live in Him, you become increasingly knowledgeable about His characteristics and desires. That’s why this verse starts off by saying, “If you remain in me...ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” That remain word is central to this verse because as you know Christ more, your requests become aligned with His character and desire.

Almighty God, thank you for the privilege of living with You. Thank you for making known Your character to me and calling me into a deeper walk with you.

Father, how selfish I’ve been by giving You my list of things I want You to perform in my timing. I want my prayer life to be a reflection of Your nature and desires.

Lord God, I humbly ask You to change my heart so it is burdened with the need of souls for Your kingdom. As George Whitefield prays, “God, give me a deep humility, a well-guided zeal, a burning love and a single eye, and then let men or devils do their worst!”
